Carney sends army to northwestern Ontario as wildfires blaze in the province

The Canadian Armed Forces have been deployed to northwestern Ontario as wildfires continue to burn across the interior provinces.Â
Personnel and aircraft have been sent to the region to help with emergency airlift evacuations near Sandy Lake First Nation, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Sunday morning.Â
On Sunday evening, Carney announced that he convened the federal government’s Incident Response Group to coordinate wildfire response efforts with ministers and senior officials.Â

“The federal government stands ready to provide additional support wherever needed,” he wrote, expressing gratitude to first responders and volunteers working to protect communities across the country.
Ontario had put in a request for federal assistance to deal with the rapidly spreading fires.
There are dozens of “out of control” wildfires across Canada, particularly in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, according to an from the Government of Canada.
ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ and surrounding areas had some of the worst air quality on the planet Friday as smoke from the wildfires in Manitoba and Saskatchewan blew into southern Ontario. The city peaked at 10+ on the on Friday, which means residents were at a “very high risk,†according to Environment Canada.
