Man dead, woman critically injured after east end apartment fire
A third person was injured escaping the fire near Gerrard Street East and Glenside Avenue, but their injuries weren’t serious, according to a ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ fire representative.
Neighbours in an east-end apartment building struggled in vain to rescue a man in his 70s who was trapped in a burning unit late Saturday night.
“On arrival at the fourth floor, there were some occupants attempting to rescue the occupants,” trapped in a unit on the fourth floor, ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Fire’s Paul O’Brien told reporters on Sunday morning at the scene of the fatal blaze at 1320 Gerrard St. E., near .Ìý
Emergency crews then rescued two people and brought them down to the lobby. A man in his 70s was pronounced dead in hospital, O’Brien said.

The female occupant was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital for burn treatment, O’Brien told reporters.Ìý
Another person was injured escaping the fire, but their injuries weren’t serious, O’Brien added.
O’Brien extended his “deepest condolences” to the family of the man who died.
Firefighters put the fire out by 1 a.m. Sunday.ÌýInvestigators are probing the origin of the fire, O’Brien said, adding there is no threat to public safety and fire alarms in the building appeared to have been working.Ìý
“Other residents did escape by notification of the alarms,” he said.
The fire was treated as a two-alarm incident, he added.
There is no damage to other units, aside from “minor water damage” in the hallway from firefighting, O’Brien said, adding residents in other units weren’t displaced.
