Last year, ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Hydro responded to 13 power outages related to raccoons interfering with their equipment, the electricity distributor said in an email.

On average, crews were able to safely restore power to residents in less than 80 minutes — an improvement of 35 per cent compared to its success rate in 2020, the company said.

But it said it continues to take preventative measures related to animal contact.

“This work includes periodic patrols of feeders and other equipment to ensure any signs of animal encroachment are addressed, along with the installation of animal guards and enclosures on equipment that may be more susceptible to animal contact.

“While it’s not possible to completely animal proof our distribution system, these steps help keep wildlife safe and keep the power on,” the company said.
