The people have spoken, and the results are in for the second round of the Star’s Patty Bracket! Disclaimer: in my mind, they’re all winners — every bakery, regardless of placement in the brackets, deserves a visit. Still, with just under 3,300 votes cast to determine the city’s beloved patties, these are the bakeries moving on to round two.
In the first matchup, Caribbean Queen of Patties eked out a victory with just 24 more votes than Michidean. It’s not much of a surprise — owner Georgina Hamilton has become a beloved culinary fixture at the busy Bloor and Lansdowne intersection, whereas Michidean operates more in the background, supplying restaurants and snack shops. Plus, its main bakery in Markham is tucked in an office park, making its takeout window a bit harder to casually stumble upon.
In the next matchup, Fahmee moves ahead of George’s Tastee. The love for Fahmee runs deep. It’s been supplying patties to subway station snack shops for decades and I suspect there’s a bit of an underdog story at play, with owner Faiz Abdella bringing the business back after a devastating fire in 2022.
The JunePlum by Patois vs. Patty Cake and Ice Cream matchup was the closest race, with single-digit vote margins throughout the day. Ultimately, JunePlum came out on top — by just eight votes. (Every vote really does count.)
Meanwhile, Little Jamaica prevailed in a big way, with both of its patty shops — Randy’s Patties and Kingston 12 Patty Shop, advancing to the next round over Patty Time (still a coworker’s go-to) and Stush Patties (still one of the best vegan patties out there).
In a bit of a surprising upset, Allan’s Pastry Shop edged out Kensington Market’s Golden Patty by just 13 votes. I would’ve thought Golden Patty’s less common fillings, like ackee and saltfish (a favourite of mine), as well as callaloo, would win people over, but the people chose the suburban staple. On a side note: the Peanut Plaza location of Allan’s has recently changed ownership, so it’s no longer an official Allan’s outpost — but it still stocks Allan’s baked goods, including their ready-to-eat patties.
Perhaps the toughest matchup I put together was Patty King versus Tin’nels. Both are longstanding staples that generations of ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½nians have bought patties by the box from, but in the end, Patty King moves on.
And while it’s one of the lesser-known patty shops in the bracket, fans of P Jay’s Jamaican Takeout showed up. It moves on to the next round, beating out Etobicoke’s Pattie World Bakery.
Here are your elite eight. Vote now until 11 a.m. Wednesday.
