CINCINNATI (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit his 42nd homer of the season, a two-run shot that highlighted a four-run eighth inning, as the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies rallied to beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 Monday night, extending their winning streak to four games.
Schwarber’s 42nd homer moved him past Shohei Ohtani and into the NL lead. The Dodgers faced the Angels later Monday night. Seattle’s Cal Raleigh leads the AL and MLB with 45 homers. Schwarber has 97 RBIs this season.
Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott (8-3) allowed only three hits through seven innings. But, with two outs in the eighth, he allowed RBI doubles by Weston Wilson and Trea Turner. Schwarber followed with a two-run shot off Tony Santillan to complete the rally.
Abbott bounced back after a rough outing on Wednesday when he allowed four earned runs and a pair of homers in a 6-1 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Against the Phillies, he retired the first 12 batters he faced before J.T. Realmuto doubled leading off the fifth.
YANKEES 6, TWINS 2
NEW YORK (AP) — Will Warren gave up three hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings to become the first New York starting pitcher to get an out in the seventh inning in a month in a win over Minnesota.
Warren (7-5), who allowed homers to Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach, struck out seven and walked none before Luke Weaver and David Bednar finished off New York’s 23rd win in its last 30 regular-season meetings with Minnesota.
Cody Bellinger, Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice homered against Minnesota starter Zebby Matthews (3-4).
Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered in the eighth after Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge hit RBI singles in the seventh.
CARDINALS 3, ROCKIES 2
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Brendan Donovan hit a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning, Miles Mikolas didn’t give up a hit through 5 1/3 innings, and St. Louis sent Colorado to their eighth straight loss.
Juan Mejia (1-1) failed to hold a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, while Kyle Leahy (3-1) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings after Mikolas went 6 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the season.
Mikolas was positioned for a loss after Warming Bernabel and Brenton Doyle drove in runs in the seventh inning to give the Rockies a 2-1 lead. Tyler Freeman broke up Mikolas’ no-hit bid in the sixth inning. He gave up four hits, a walk and struck out three.
Mikolas lost his shot at a win after Jordan Beck bunted his way on and advanced to second on Nolan Gorman’s throwing error. Doyle drove home Mickey Moniak to put the Rockies ahead.
Chase Dollander allowed one run through five innings, the first Rockies starter since Aug. 2 to allow fewer than five runs.
BREWERS 7, PIRATES 1
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brice Turang hit his first career leadoff home run, Jose Quintana allowed three hits over six solid innings and Milwaukee extended their winning streak to 10 games with a win over Pittsburgh.
Quintana (10-4) struck out three and walked one as the Brewers (74-44) improved to 25-4 over the last 29 games, including 13-1 in the last 14. The only real hiccup was Joey Bart’s home run in the third.
Turang sent a sinker from Pirates starter Andrew Heaney over the wall in left center.
Christian Yelich opened the third with a solo home run, RBI singles from Sal Frelick and Brandon Lockridge and an unearned run on Bart’s throwing error capped the third inning.
Grant Anderson held the Pirates without a hit in the seventh and eighth. Shelby Miller pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
ROYALS 7, NATIONALS 4
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvadore Perez and Kyle Isbel hit two-run homers in the sixth inning and Kansas City beat Washington.
off rookie Cade Cavalli after Maikel Garcia drew a leadoff walk, tying the game at 4. Adam Frazier singled, chasing Cavalli, and Jackson Rutledge (1-2) entered and retired Randal Grichuk on a double-play grounder. Nick Loftin had a two-out single before scoring on . Perez’s homer was his 21st.
James Wood walked leading off the first against Bailey Falter in his home debut for the Royals after being acquired from the Pirates at the trade deadline. Josh Bell hit his 15th homer — a 422-foot, two-out shot to left-center — to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead.
Garcia, Perez and Frazier had consecutive singles to start the second for the Royals’ first run. Loftin’s sacrifice fly tied it 2-all.
Falter left a tie game after four innings and 76 pitches. Wood singled off Daniel Lynch IV (4-2) leading off the fifth and Paul DeJong hit his fourth homer one out later to put the Nationals up 4-2.
Mike Yastrzemski added a run in the eighth with a sac fly. Frazier finished 3 for 4 and Carlos Estévez pitched the ninth for his 30th save.
ASTROS 7, RED SOX 6
HOUSTON (AP) — Ramón UrÃas had three hits with a two-run homer and Chas McCormick hit his first homer this season as Houston built a big lead and held on for a win over Boston.
Carlos Correa hit an RBI single to help the Astros to the victory after they were swept in Boston to start the month. It was in a blockbuster trade from the Twins.
Houston starter Cristian Javier (1-0) had a solid outing in his return after sitting out more than 14 months . He allowed two hits and two runs in the first inning before settling down and giving up just one single over the next four innings.
Alex Bregman’s two-run home run in the first inning gave Boston an early lead in his first game in Houston since leaving the Astros this offseason.
RANGERS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 6, 10 INNINGS
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jake Burger hit a pinch-hit RBI single in the 10th inning and Texas ended their four-game losing streak with a win over Arizona.
Burger lined a 99.4 mph pitch from Andrew Saalfrank (0-1) off the left-field wall to end the game. Sam Haggerty, the automatic runner who had advanced to third on Marcus Semien’s flyout, scored the winning run.
Rowdy Tellez had tied the game when he homered leading off the bottom of the ninth.
Phil Maton (2-3), who earned his first win with Texas as the fifth reliever after starter Nathan Eovaldi struggled, retired all three batters he faced in the 10th.
TIGERS 2, WHITE SOX 1
CHICAGO (AP) — Spencer Torkelson hit a tiebreaking home run in the ninth to give Detroit a win over Chicago.
The first baseman’s 26th homer with one out in the inning came off reliever Brandon Eisert (2-4) and hit the foul pole in left.
The Tigers won their second straight game and for the third time in four contests.
Rookie Colson Montgomery hit his 10th home run for the AL-worst White Sox, who managed just four hits and lost for the seventh time in eight games.
Kyle Finnegan (2-4), the second of three Detroit relievers, got the win, and Will Vest came on after a 63-minute rain delay to work a clean ninth for his 17th save.
ANGELS 7, DODGERS 4
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Zach Neto hit his eighth leadoff home run of the season and added another homer in the sixth, and the Los Angeles Angels overcame during an eighth-inning rally in their victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Mike Trout had a two-run single and Yoán Moncada drove in two runs for the Angels, who are improbably 4-0 in the Freeway Series this season.
The defending World Series champion Dodgers’ lead over San Diego in the NL West also slipped to just one game for the first time since June 14 .
The Dodgers trailed 7-0 before Ohtani homered in his third straight game, driving a solo shot to right in the eighth inning. Ohtani has a 10-game hitting streak in August, and he has four homers among his nine hits in the Dodgers’ last five games.
PADRES 4, GIANTS 1
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jake Croneworth hit a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh and Freddy Fermin followed with a two-run homer off Logan Webb as San Diego backed Yu Darvish in a win over San Francisco.
Darvish (2-3) struck out six and didn’t walk a batter over six innings, allowing one run on four hits in his seventh start of the season. The right-hander missed more than three months to start the year because of elbow issues. He didn’t make his first start until July 7.
Robert Suarez finished for his MLB-leading 33rd save.
RAYS 7, ATHLETICS 4
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero hit back-to-back home runs, and Ryan Pepiot went 6 1/3 innings as Tampa Bay Rays beat the Athletics.
Lowe’s 23rd and Caminero’s 33rd home runs of the season stretched a 6-1 Rays lead in the seventh inning that was cut to three in the bottom half. Lowe added a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Pepiot (8-9) pitched six innings of one-run ball before allowing the three-run shot to Tyler Soderstrom in the seventh.
Shea Langeliers hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.
