Karen Hao’s bestseller “Empire of AI” began with her coverage of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.


Almost 60 years after a sentient computer refused to “open the pod bay doors” in “2001: A Space Odyssey,” the idea of artificial intelligence, or AI, continues to stir unease, despite the fact it’s already in widespread use.

The new book “Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s OpenAI,” by Karen Hao — which joins the original non-fiction list at No. 9 — is the journalist’s deep dive into the implications of the technology for the planet and for humanity.
