“Do not consume, use, sell, serve or distribute,” the CFIA said while recommending people see a doctor if they’ve gotten sick from eating the fillets.

The government allows 200 milligrams of histamine per kilogram in anchovy products. The recall note did not specify what the histamine levels were in the Vicente Marino product but did say that the recall was initiated by the company.

“Histamine is a powerful chemical that can cause a reaction in the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, skin or cardiovascular system,” Health Canada says on their website.

The recall was labeled as Class II which means there is a “moderate” risk that eating the food could cause short-term but non-lethal health problems.
