A ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ man has been charged with first-degree murder after his common-law partner was found dead near Highway 401 in Pickering early Friday morning.
The victim was identified as Yuk Kwan Chu, 67, of ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ in a . She is the city’s 20th homicide victim this year.

Investigators were working on a missing persons case involving the woman near Brimley Road and Omni Drive on Wednesday. It was quickly deemed “suspicious,†Det. Sgt. Phillip Campbell told reporters at a news conference Friday evening.

On Wednesday, officers charged a man for aggravated assault in connection with the missing woman. The body wasn’t found until midnight Friday in the area of Highway 401 and Whites Road in Pickering, near the border of Scarborough, Campbell said.
Police confirmed that the missing woman is the homicide victim.
The man, 60-year-old Zhi Kuang, had his charges upgraded to first-degree murder, according to the news release. He was scheduled to attend court at the ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ Regional Bail Centre on Friday.
Investigators are not looking for any other suspects, Campbell told the media on Friday.Â
Police have not yet shared the suspected cause of the woman’s death.
“I know we say this all the time, but this is very early in the investigation,†Campbell said. “This matter is now before the courts, and with the investigation still active, there are limits to what we can disclose.â€
He said the woman was reported missing in ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ and was located in Durham Region. Campbell added the suspect, who was in a common-law relationship with the victim, was providing police with “some information†that officers are investigating.
“We ask for patience as investigators continue their work,†said Campbell.
