Anita Anand denies report that Canadian-made weapons are being sent to Israel
No Canadian-made lethal weapons are being sent to Israel for its war in Gaza, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said Friday, denying a report that accused the Liberal government of continuing to allow arms shipments despite its claims to the contrary.
Declaring that the Carney government will “not allow Canadian-made weapons to fuel this conflict in any way,” Anand said Ottawa has refused any new permits for “controlled goods” that could be used in Gaza, and that it froze existing permits last year that could allow military components to be used in Israel’s military offensive.Â
“Canada has drawn and will continue to draw a hard line,” . “The law is clear. No company can export controlled goods without a valid permit. We will not hesitate to ensure that those who violate this law face legal consequences which include fines, seizures, and criminal prosecution.”

Anand took direct aim at specific allegations in the report released this week, accusing it of making a “number of claims” that are “misleading and significantly misrepresent the facts.”
The report, which was released by several non-governmental and pro-Palestinian groups Tuesday, cited data from the Israeli Tax Authority that it said suggested shipments of lethal military equipment were still being sent from Canada to Israel.
Namely, the report uncovered data its authors said shows Israel has imported hundreds of thousands of bullets from Canada since 2023. Anand said those “bullets” were in fact “paintball-style projectiles” that she said “cannot be used in combat.”
She also denied the claim that several shipments of mortar shells had been sent to Israel, and that Canadian military components had been flown to Israel on commercial flights.
Anand’s response comes amid international outrage over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and as Western nations face increasing pressure to distance themselves from Israel’s military campaign in the besieged Palestinian territory.Â
