A milk chocolate treat sold online in Canada is being pulled from the shelves over fears it could be contaminated with salmonella.Â
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says the recall affects Dubai Pistachio & Knafeh Milk Chocolate (145 g) with Universal Product Code 6 11834 51237 1 and code 225.174. The product was sold online and in Quebec by Distribution Bonbons JJ Candy.
The recall was triggered by test results, according to the CFIA.
While there were no reported illnesses linked to the chocolate as of Monday, the recall is among three of pistachios or pistachio-containing products that the against consuming due to an outbreak of salmonella infections in Canada. Customers are urged not to eat, use, sell, serve or distribute the product, the CFIA said, adding the chocolate should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.Â
Salmonella infection can cause fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, the agency said. While most healthy people recover without treatment, the bacteria can be dangerous — and sometimes deadly — for young children, older adults, pregnant people and those with weakened immune systems. Long-term complications can include severe arthritis, the agency added.
Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, the CFIA said, reminding people to check to see if they have recalled products before consuming.Â
