The suspicious deaths of two men at a Scarborough home on Wednesday evening has left residents bewildered and mourning the loss of a familiar face in the neighbourhood.
ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ police say officers found the two men — ages 62 and 67 — dead inside a residence on Chelwood Road after responding to a wellness check just before 6:30 p.m. According to residents, at least six police cruisers, a fire truck and two ambulances were on scene. The property just east of Birchmount Avenue belonged to a 96-year-old woman who neighbours say died last month. She lived there with her son.
Police initially shared few details about the deaths but on Thursday confirmed they were treating them as suspicious. They said the investigation is being led by the homicide and missing persons unit and that there was no threat to public safety.

A memorial of flowers, a teddy bear and a bag of Skittles lay outside the cordoned-off property on Thursday as a police cruiser and a special constable vehicle were stationed out front. One officer sat in the backyard throughout the day.
Cindy Woods, a longtime resident, said she knew the family who lived there for three decades. She credits the mother and son for inspiring her to take up gardening.
“It’s such a tragedy,†she said. “We all feel so sad this has happened.â€
More than half a dozen residents who spoke to the Star described one of the men who died as a friendly but quiet figure in the neighbourhood who, up until his mother’s death last month, was devoted to caring for her.
“He was very good to his mother,†said Martin DeAbreu, who has lived across the street from the family for decades.
“Wherever she wanted to go he’d take her there,†he said, whether it was for a walk around the block, to the mall or to get her hair cut.

Residents like Woods and Sherwin Gudoy recognized him by the ball caps he’d wear around the property or the Lotto 649 ticket he’d be seen scratching on his way home from the convenience store down the street.
He was a retired post office worker who’d “be outside having a cigarette at any hour of the day,†said Woods.
“Police are investigating to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, and we will provide more information when we have it,” officersÌýsaid.Ìý
