In eventually recognizing Palestinian statehood, I believe Canada should encourage Palestine to allow a much more multi-ethnic and multicultural society than what is currently envisaged by its constitution. In particular, the constitution should allow Jews who are not Israeli citizens and who have recent ancestral connections to Palestine or another Arab country to become full citizens of Palestine. It seems unlikely that many Jews would want to do this, but just as Christian and Muslim Arabs can be citizens of Israel, Jews should be allowed to be citizens of Palestine. In the immediate future, this might be only a symbolic gesture, yet it would establish an important principle.

As an Israeli-Canadian Jew who’s long been involved in human-rights struggles, I have been a vocal critic of Israeli occupation for decades. Words of condemnation seem more ineffective now, as Israel continues to disregard basic morality with its conduct in Gaza. So instead of resisting through mere words, I’ve begun the process of renouncing my Israeli citizenship and passport. That means I can’t return to the place of my birth, the place where I was raised, as entry is legally denied to Israeli citizens on foreign passports. It’s a small price to pay. I will have no part in Israel’s unspeakable crimes against humanity and will continue to work toward a free Palestine.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has now become totally unbearable for Canadians and, it appears, for much of the rest of the global community. More than two-thirds of Israeli citizens want to live in peace with their Palestinian neighbours, but it’s clear that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s heart has been hardened by hatred and anger. Perhaps he’s concerned about the dire consequences he might face when this war ends. While the United States has taken a marked pro-Israel stance, other countries are now demanding an end to the starvation and deaths of civilians in Gaza.
Hats off to our own prime minister, Mark Carney, for rising to the defence of so many innocent Palestinian citizens. Most Canadians strongly support his admonition to Israel, via a joint call from Canada, the European Union and 24 other countries, to end the war now. More than 59,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed in Gaza during this conflict, so it’s our collective duty to demand peace.
